Beckett outshines Danks as BoSox top ChiSox

08/12/2008 -
Chicago, IL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - J.D. Drew hit a go-ahead two-run double in the
seventh inning which helped Boston get past Chicago, 5-1, in the finale of a
four-game set from U.S. Cellular Field.
Jed Lowrie added two RBI for the Red Sox, who earned a split in the series by
winning the second and last contests. Jacoby Ellsbury added a late run-scoring
single.
Josh Beckett (11-8) went eight innings for the win, scattering seven hits and
one run with eight strikeouts and no walks.
"The reason we were able to win that ballgame, was the way that Beckett
pitched," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "He matched Danks pitch for
pitch and kept us right there. Then the big hit was Drew's double that put us
ahead."
A.J. Pierzynski knocked in the only run for the White Sox, who have dropped
two of three. The loss, coupled with Minnesota's 4-0 win over the Yankees,
dropped Chicago a half-game behind the Twins in the AL Central.
John Danks (9-5) carried a perfect game into the sixth inning only to suffer
the loss. He allowed two runs on two hits with a pair of walks over seven
innings, and his nine strikeouts tied a career-high.
Danks retired the first 17 batters he faced, remaining perfect through 5 2/3
innings, but nailed Ellsbury in the back to put the first Sox runner on
base. Coco Crisp, however, grounded into a force at second to end the frame.
The White Sox put two on in the sixth, but a Jim Thome line drive to center
was snagged by Crisp as he fell backwards to keep it a one-run game.
Dustin Pedroia flew out to start the seventh, before Kevin Youkilis dropped a
broken-bat base hit to center which broke up Danks' no-hit bid.
Mike Lowell walked, then Jason Bay went down swinging. Drew then knocked a
double to the wall in left-center which scored a pair to put Boston up 2-1.
Lowrie followed with a walk but Danks recovered to get Jason Varitek swinging.
The Red Sox put the game out of reach in the ninth.
Lowell walked, Bay singled and Drew singled to first to load the bases. Lowrie
slammed a double down the line in left that scored two, but Drew was tagged
out at home. Varitek's fly out moved Lowrie to third and he came home on a
base hit from Ellsbury which gave the visitors a comfortable 5-1 lead.
Jonathan Papelbon finished off the win with a scoreless ninth, sending all
three batters down in succession.
"It's a shame we didn't score some runs, considering the way Danks pitched,
said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. "That might have been the best start
that John's had all year, but we didn't lose the game so much as the Red Sox
won it."
Chicago got on the board first, with a single run in the third inning. Nick
Swisher and Juan Uribe singled to begin the frame, and after a fly out which
advanced Swisher, he scored on a Pierzynski sacrifice fly.

MySportsbook.com betting odds favor Europe in 2007 Ryder Cup
September 19, 2007 – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com. The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current betting odds on the 2007 Ryder Cup favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.
Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to name a few. Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR. They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.
The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer. Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.
